Field Report #004

Zelienople Area Fleet Tire Safety Assessment
July 19, 2026

Light-Truck and Rigid-Truck Tire Observations

As part of OZMOS LLC’s ongoing independent fleet safety assessment activities, a field observation was conducted in the Zelienople area to evaluate tire conditions among commercial vehicles operating in light- and medium-duty applications.

Three vehicles were observed during this assessment:

  • Two light-duty commercial trucks

  • One rigid truck

The vehicles were observed in a paved customer-accessible parking area. Overall vehicle and tire conditions suggested a relatively high level of maintenance awareness.

Despite the generally well-maintained condition, several tire-related observations highlighted the challenges of managing tires across diverse light-truck operating conditions.

Key Positive Observations

Several positive maintenance practices were identified during the assessment:

  • Clearly displayed tire inflation guidance

  • Wheel-nut position markings

  • Generally good tire condition

  • Limited stone trapping and tread damage

  • Clean, paved operating environment

These observations suggest a proactive approach to routine vehicle and tire maintenance.

Steer Tire Irregular Wear

Finding #1
Steer-Axle Irregular Wear

Irregular wear was observed on the inner rib of several steer tires, including tapered wear and localized heel-and-toe characteristics.

Tire inflation strategy may be one contributing factor; however, determining the appropriate inflation pressure requires consideration of actual axle load, tire specifications, and applicable load/inflation guidance.

Irregular wear can accelerate tread loss and increase tire operating cost even when sufficient overall tread depth remains.

Finding #2
Steer-Axle Tire Mismatch

Different tire products and remaining tread depths were observed across left and right steer positions.

Differences included:

  • Tread pattern design

  • Remaining tread depth

  • Wear progression

Maintaining comparable tire specifications and tread conditions across steer positions helps support consistent vehicle response and predictable tire performance.

Finding #3
Sidewall Scuffing and Rim Contact

Sidewall scuffing and localized rim deformation were observed on a light-duty vehicle.

These conditions may reflect repeated contact with curbs or other roadside obstacles, a common operating challenge in urban and last-mile delivery environments.

Although no immediate safety concern was identified from the observed condition, periodic inspection can help identify progressive damage before it becomes more significant.

Finding #4
Dual-Tire Mismatch

A dual-tire assembly was observed with visibly different effective tire diameters.

Potential effects of dual mismatch include:

  • Uneven load sharing

  • Accelerated wear

  • Increased heat generation

  • Reduced operating efficiency

Maintaining closely matched tire dimensions and tread depths is an important element of dual-tire management.

Finding #5
Wheel Component Damage

A damaged wheel-related component was observed on one steer position. Evidence of a previous repair was also visible.

Although the exact component condition could not be fully evaluated through external observation alone, continued monitoring or replacement may be appropriate if the damage progresses or creates a risk of component separation.

Finding #6
Wheel Hardware Corrosion

Surface corrosion was visible on portions of the wheel hardware.

While the observed condition alone does not establish a structural concern, periodic monitoring can help identify progression that may warrant maintenance attention.

Professional Perspective

Light-Truck Tire Management Challenges:

  • Variable loading conditions

  • Different driver behaviors

  • Frequent curb contact

  • Urban / narrow-road operation

  • High vehicle utilization

  • Inflation management

Light-truck operations often involve a wider range of loading conditions, driving environments, and driver behaviors than may be apparent from the vehicle itself. These variables can make consistent tire management particularly challenging.

Irregular Wear Is a Management Challenge:

Irregular wear cannot always be completely eliminated. However, proper inflation management, tire matching, alignment verification, rotation strategies, and periodic technical inspection can help reduce its impact on tire life and fleet operating cost.

OZMOS Assessment

The Zelienople assessment demonstrated that even generally well-maintained commercial vehicles can present opportunities for further tire-management optimization.

Light-truck operations in particular present unique challenges due to variable loading, driver behavior, operating environment, and tire application requirements.

Proactive tire management should include:

  • Inflation strategy review

  • Tire matching

  • Irregular wear monitoring

  • Rotation planning

  • Periodic technical inspections

Periodic independent tire assessments can help identify conditions that may not be apparent through routine maintenance alone. These practices can support improved tire life, vehicle safety, and fleet operating efficiency.
